About

Make it a day on not a day off, and celebrate Martin Luther King Day with the CCE and the Kenworthy Performing Arts Centre.

The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Jan. 18, 2021, marks the 26th anniversary of the day of service that celebrates the Civil Rights leader’s life and legacy. Observed each year on the third Monday in January as “a day on, not a day off,” MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.

The CCE has a long history of leading projects on MLK Day, and this year is no exception. Please join us at the  Kenworthy Performing Arts Centre in Moscow, Idaho (only 8 miles away from Pullman). This year volunteers will assist the Kenworthy in moving materials from their stage to storage, they will help spruce up the the historic theater as staff preps it for visitors once COVID restrictions end, and volunteers will have the unique opportunity to see the behind the scenes working of this unique theater.

The Kenworthy theater occupies a dominant position in the turn-of-the-century cityscape of downtown Moscow. Although the opening of the Kenworthy as a public theater by Milburn Kenworthy took place on January 4, 1926, some of the building was in use as the Crystal Theater as early as 1908. It was run as Moscow’s premier movie theater by the Kenworthy family until the late 1980s when it was leased until its gift to the Kenworthy Performing Arts Centre, Inc. in 2000.  The theater was placed on the National Register of Historic Placein 2002.

As a reminder, as part of the WSU spring 2021 Semester Testing Program, many WSU students will need to take a COVID-19 test upon their arrival to Pullman. This includes: students living in WSU residence halls or WSU-owned apartments; students who work on campus; students who have in-person activities, classes or appointments, including athletic programs; students who plan to access any campus facilities (e.g. dining facilities, CUB, Chinook Student Center, recreation facilities, SPARK, etc.). Students living in Pullman are strongly encouraged to take advantage of arrival testing.

All volunteers must complete the WSU attestation form before working on a CCE project. This can be done at https://attestation.wsu.edu

You are required to provide your own transportation. We will be meeting at the Green lot of Lighty Building at 10 a.m. and we can lead you to the project. The project is scheduled from 10am-12pm. Once the project is completed, students will leave at 12pm through their own means of transportation that they used to arrive on site.

All COVID regulations will be followed. You MUST have a mask on at all times while on site and do your best to keep the 6 feet social distancing. Please dress for the weather, and be sure to bring a full water bottle.
